How to Prevent Dental Implant Failure

Poor Bone Health:

If you do not have enough healthy bone in your jaw to support an implant, the implant may fail. This is often due to gum disease or other oral health problems. In cases where your dentist does not think you have enough bone mass, a bone graft or sinus lift may be performed to increase the chances of success.

Smoking & Alcohol Consumption

Smoking can increase the risk of implant failure. This is because smoking weakens the gum and bone tissue, and slows down the healing process. Excess alcohol consumption has also been found to impair osseointegration, meaning the  implant may not attach properly to the bone.

Poor Oral Hygiene:

If you do not brush and floss your teeth regularly, plaque and bacteria can build up around the implant. This can lead to infections, such as gum disease and/or peri-implant diseases. Both of these can result in implant failure.

It is also important to see your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. If plaque or tartar builds up around the implant, it can increase the risk of infection.

Avoid Smoking & Alcohol Consumption

Smoking and alcohol consumption can both impair osseointegration and increase the risk of implant failure. If you are unable to quit smoking or drinking, at least try to reduce your intake as much as possible. However, be advised that some dentists will not perform dental implant surgery on patients who cannot stop smoking, since it will negatively affect the outcome of the procedure.

Follow Postoperative Instructions

After your dental implant surgery, it is important to follow your dentist’s postoperative instructions closely. This includes taking any medication prescribed, keeping the area clean and free of bacteria, and adhering to temporary dietary restrictions. Since the success of dental implants is heavily reliant on patient compliance, this is a highly effective way to prevent dental implant failure.

Overall, dental implants have a high success rate with a low chance of implant failure. Nevertheless, there is still a small risk associated with getting dental implants.
